Fishing in Bimbini, Anjouan

The northwest coast of the island has deep waters close to the shore. The coastal reef is rare and only slightly developed towards the west (between Foumbani and Selle Island). The east coast, high, rocky, and generally steep, is fringed in a few places by a narrow reef.

The southwest coast is almost entirely bordered by reefs, which, in its western part, extend up to a mile offshore. Some indentations in the coral reef provide good anchorages with sandy beaches.

Artisanal fishing is characterized by the use of small boats, 6.3 to 7.1 meters long, made of fiberglass, without decks and motorized, with engine power not exceeding 25 HP. The number of boats has been estimated at 500. The fishing techniques used are hand-lining and trolling. In general, aside from the proper practice of traditional fisheries, the technical level of the fishermen is limited and relatively low.

Traditional fishing is characterized by the use of non-motorized outrigger canoes. Their number has been estimated at 1,000. The most commonly used fishing technique is hand-lining for demersal species.
Fishing in Bimbini, Anjouan, is an essential activity for the livelihood of the village's residents.

Fishermen use various techniques, including nets to target reef species and line fishing methods to catch pelagic species. Artisanal fishing is the cornerstone of national food security and the main source of animal protein for the rural population of the Comoros. Bimbini's fishermen also participate in marine management programs to ensure sustainable fishing and the conservation of marine biodiversity.
