Balaenoptera musculus
The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), also called the blue rorqual, is a species of cetacean in the family Balaenopteridae. Females are larger than males. Its average length is 25 to 27 m with a weight of 130 tons, but it can exceed 31 meters in length and 170 tons, making it the largest living animal today and, to current knowledge, the largest (after two large sauropods including Diplodocus hallorum) to have ever lived on Earth. The longest confirmed specimen measured 33.5 m in length and the heaviest weighed 190 tons.

The blue whale has a long, streamlined body that can appear stretched compared to the stocky body of other whales. Its head is flat and U-shaped. A median ridge runs between the blowholes and the tip of the upper jaw. The mouth is densely lined with about 300 baleen plates (each about one meter long) of black color that hang from the upper jaw.
