Foumbouni, located on the southeast coast of the island of Grande Comore, was a powerful coastal city during the era of the Comorian sultanates. Protected as a stronghold from the early 19th century, the city earned the nickname Foumbouni Ngomé because of its fortifications. It experienced several attacks, including a Malagasy raid in 1798 and a Portuguese raid that destroyed half of the citadel. Foumbouni has more than ten mosques and honors its great historical figures. In 2007, a street registration project for Foumbouni was launched, and today the city is represented by the Marseille rapper Alonzo
Foumbouni is the historic town of the Mdombozi dynasty, of Sultan Hachim who opposed French colonization. It was the stronghold of Prince Said Housein, heir to the throne of Grande Comore and who was president of the Association of Former Fighters in the Comoros..
